Dyslexia in Children
At OC Opticians we are able to test those who have visual dyslexia – problems with reading from conventional printed pages.
The first stage is to test to see if the eyes are working properly together. Next, changing the colour of the background to text may help. The dyslexic can then use coloured overlays when reading. If these help greatly, we can prescribe precision tinted spectacle lenses to wear using our new intuitive colorimeter.
Not all dyslexics suffer from ‘visual stress’, and sometimes non-dyslexics may benefit from coloured overlays or tints.
Colourimetry
Colourimetry assessment is designed to alleviate the patients symptoms of visual stress by selecting a precision tint from a broad spectrum of colours.
Following successful use of a coloured overlay, the Intuitive Colorimeter is used to assess the patient under the direction of an optometrist, and a precision tint may be prescribed as appropriate. The colour will be specific to each individual’s needs, much more precise than an overlay and very often a different colour to the overlay. Coloured lenses are also much more convenient than overlays for board and computer work.
This colour can be prescribed onto Cerium Precision tinted lenses.
Dry Eye Clinic
Do your eyes often feel dry or irritated? Do certain activities, like reading or working on the computer, make your eyes feel scratchy? Are you wearing your contact lenses less because they feel uncomfortable? Do your eyes water alot?
If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, you may have what dry eye practitioners call dry eye syndrome. It’s a common problem, but you don’t have to live with it.
Dry eye is when you are not be making enough tears and the tears that you produce are of poor quality. It could also be due to the tears you produce evaporating away faster than they should.
The normal function of the tears is to keep the eye wet and lubricated. Failure to do so can lead to the following symptoms;
> Dryness
> Burning, stinging or itching
> Gritty feeling
> Irritation from wind or smoke
> Blurred or smeared vision
> Tired Eyes
> Red Eyes
> Excessive watering
> Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
> Contact lens discomfort
We run specialist dry eye clinics and with the right advice and products we can often help you to experience a big reduction in your symptoms.
You may need a full eye examination prior to your dry eye assessment if it has been more than 2 years since your last examination.
A three month tailored treatment plan costs just £40.00 and includes; Initial triage and questionnaire, full dry eye assessment, two follow up appointments after one and then three months aswell as help, advice and ongoing support from our trained staff.
The treatment and products needed will vary depending on the type of dry eye you suffer from and your optician will advise you on the best options.
Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS)
At OC Opticians we are now able to see patients privately with minor eye conditions such as red or painful eyes without the need of paying for an eye test or the need to visit your doctors or local hospital.
Conditions that can be seen under the service include;
> Red Eye or eyelids
> Painful/Uncomfortable eyes
> Irritation and inflammation of the eye
> Significant recent sticky discharge from the eye or watering
> Recently occurring flashes or floaters
> In growing eyelashes
> Recent and sudden loss of vision
> Foreign body in the eye
To make an appointment call instore and you will be asked some questions about your symptoms in order to assess how quickly you need to be seen by the service, which will be within 24 hours in urgent cases and a few days for routine appointments.
Please Note this is not a full sight test.
If you have a major eye condition that is being monitored by your optometrist or hospital eye service, this will not be covered by this service e.g. cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.
If your condition is more serious you will be referred either urgently or routinely to a hospital eye clinic.
